This is Random Bites of nothing. A collection of random thoughts and ideas I'll be posting every Sunday. Short blurbs about all the different things this blog will talk about. I'll attempt to touch on as many topics as possible in the Random Bites, so enjoy, or not, it's all up to you.

Movie Bites:

I've owned the DVD since it came out and I have to say it, The Dark Knight is my favorite movie all time. I know the movie gets a lot of press and a lot of hype/hate because of the dead star effect, (A subject I will be getting into later this week) but I do want to talk about it a little bit. The performances were spectacular and the Heath Ledger performance is Oscar worthy, though I don't think it's an unquestionable win like some fans do. The plot was well done, it took the elements of the source material (The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke) and adapted them into a dark brooding story that I loved. Christopher Nolan is turning into a great director and I can't wait to see what he does next. All in all it's the perfect movie for someone like me. (No I'm not saying it's a perfect movie.)

I'll say it now. I believe J.J. Abrahms' Star Trek movie will be good. It won't be great, but it will be good, far better than any ventures Berman produced after first Contact. The reasons for this are two fold. Firstly, good actors, the actors in this mover are talented, they will bring energy to the performances rather than going through the motions like the actors in the last Trek movie did. Secondly the writers of this movie have respect for the source, something that was sorely lacking, in any movie not written by Nicholas Meyer. Now I don't think this will be better than any Meyer penned films, but it will be a good movie. At least that's my prediction. Plus Rick Berman is no where near it.

Sports Bites:

Is it just me or are the lesser bowls this year looking a lot better than the BCS bowl match ups. The Sun Bowl, Gator Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Holiday Bowl all look like more competitive match ups than the Rose, Sugar, and Fiesta Bowls. The BCS Championship Game could be competitive, and the Orange Bowl certainly will be, but other than that the games are really terrible on paper.

One of these years the polls have to stop overrating Duke in basketball don't they? Just saying is all.

Print Bites:

In anticipation of the film I read Watchmen for the first time. All I have to say is wow. There is a reason this is considered one of the top English novels of all time. Not graphic novels, but novels. It really is as amazing as they say and now I can't wait for the movie.

Anyone who is at all interested in the economy and the general well being of people needs to read The Progress Paradox by Gregg Easterbrook. It really is an interesting look into the though process of everyday life and it makes a lot of sense on why people tend to think the way they do about the state of affairs in the world.

Politics Bites

It's good to know that the federal government hasn't run out of bad ideas. I thought they couldn't top the bank bail out. I was wrong, the auto bail out is far worse. It just gives these companies the incentive to continue to run their business the wrong way and wonder why they can't compete. It's enough to make you laugh if it didn't make you want to cry.

George Bush still has a month to screw something else up. I'm pulling for you W, don't let me down. We need one more really good "What the Hell" moment from this administration.

Music Bites

If it wasn't for I don't think I would even listen to music anymore. It's my life line into music you won't hear on the radio. Modern pop music just eats at my sanity anymore. I'm not one of those people who hates anything just because it's popular. In fact I despise that mentality (Another future subject I'm sure) but I will call it like I see it and most cookie cutter modern pop music is just terrible swill created to bilk teenagers out of their disposable income.
